Part of the reason that Mac OS works as well as it does is because Apple has complete vertical integration of its computers: they control the exact hardware specification, and don’t need to worry about supporting tens of thousands of possible part combinations like Microsoft has to tackle with Windows.
Believe me, you wouldn’t necessarily like the results of a hardware-agnostic Mac OS X. Sure, it would look nice and all, but Apple couldn’t guarantee a quality user experience.
